Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Refugio Amazonas.

We will pick you up at your accommodation in Puerto Maldonado or at the airport, according to your choice. Then, you will have a 1-hour travel by bus and a 1-hour navigation to get to the Refugio Amazonas, in the middle of a chestnuts forest in front of the Tambopata National Reserve. This shelter is the Wired Amazon headquarter, the first citizen science project that makes you a real scientist.

After that, you will be able to make a half an hour walk to the 35-meters high observation tower, from where you can see the reserve’s forest and, in addition, different birds’ species that inhabit the place, like toucans and macaws, among others.

Day 2: Lake Condenado – Organic Chacra.

You will start the day early in the morning to seize it and also avoid the high temperatures. You will go by boat through the Lake Condenado’s surroundings, looking for the fauna that inhabits the place. If you are lucky, you will see the hoatzins, kingfishers and alligators, among others. The same way, there’s the possibility to see giant otters and identify the difference between the ecosystem of a lake and a river in the Amazon region.

Subsequently, you will visit the organic chacra, a kind of farm located near the shelter that you will reach by boat. There you will see different crops specific to the area in which you will be in, besides seeing fruits that probably you didn’t know.

The same way, it will be planned a nighttime walk through the jungle, with which you will be able to listen to different animals that are awake even when it is already dark and night insects. In addition, you will see frogs with different colors and shapes.

Day 3: Macaw Clay Lick – Chestnuts Forests.

You will leave early in the morning to the clay lick, place known for being where a great number of macaws and parrots are gathered to eat clay. It is believed that these birds eat clay because it has a great deal of nutrients. You will identify birds thanks to binoculars and telescopes, besides the explanations of the guide that will be with you at all times.

After that, you will visit a chestnut camp near the shelter, where you will be able to see the process in which the people obtain this fruit. During the night, the Wired Amazon researchers will talk to you about the opportunities and challenges of this project inside the Tambopata National Reserve.

Day 4: Refugio Amazonas – Puerto Maldonado.

You will get up early to have breakfast and order your luggage, taking advantage of the last views around the shelter and its facilities, so then you start the return trip by boat and bus to Puerto Maldonado or the airport, where the activity ends.
