Itinerary

Start: day 1 at 9:00 am in meeting point in Iquitos.

End: day 7 at 5:00 pm in hotel or airport of Iquitos.

Day 1: Bellavista Nanay – Monkey Island – Eco Lodge.

We will meet at our starting point to head to the port of Nanay, where the river of the same name meets the Amazon River. We will sail for approximately 2 hours, where we will have the chance to see different animals, such as turtles, herons, and caimans, among others. We will arrive at Monkey Island, a rescue center for different monkey species that live in an open space so they can move about freely, and so it is easier for them to return to their natural habitat. We will also have the possibility to see anacondas, boa constrictors, and other reptiles.

After this, we will sail down the river in search of the pink river dolphin, and we will get a chance to swim in the Amazon River. In the evening, we will go for a hike to observe nocturnal nature before going to bed to rest up for the following day.

Day 2: Amazon River – Eco Lodge.

We will get up very early to watch the sun rise over the Amazon River and then take a boat ride through the surrounding areas of the lodge to observe the animals. After this, we will eat breakfast and go fish for piranhas by canoe. We will use a technique that the locals have been using for years. We will return for lunch and then go on an outing to see the Victoria amazonica, the largest water plant in the world. We will have the rest of the afternoon free until dinnertime, and then we will take a nighttime hike to look for caimans. We will stay at the lodge.

Day 3: Lagoons – Daytime Hike – Nighttime Hike.

After eating breakfast, we will go visit some lagoons close to the lodge. We can do different activities of our choosing around here: trekking, canoe trips, fishing for piranhas, observing plants, and birdwatching. After this, we will go back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, we will take a hike where we will be able to spot different monkey and bird species. We will also learn about the medicinal plants of the Amazon region. Once we get back to the lodge, we will have a moment to rest before dinner. After dinner, we will take a nighttime hike where we will be able to see different nocturnal species of the Peruvian jungle. Then, we will go back to the lodge to go to bed.

Day 4: Palo Alto – Daytime Hike – Nighttime Hike.

We will start the day with breakfast to set off with full energy on the hike awaiting us today. We will hike 30 to 45 minutes towards the Palo Alto sector. This place is a lookout point with 3 different observation levels at 5, 10, and 15 meters in height (16, 33, and 49 feet approx.). This will allow us to get different views of the surrounding jungle. Then, depending on everyone’s choice, we will be able to go for a hike, take a canoe trip, or go fishing for piranhas.

At dusk, we will go for a walk to observe the nocturnal species of the Peruvian jungle. We will sleep in hammocks at the Mirador Palo Alto campsite.

Day 5: Palo Alto – Napo River – Eco Lodge.

We will get up early to birdwatch from the lookout point. Next, we will visit the lagoons that are close to the lodge and the Napo River. The landscape here features a variety of trees, especially palm trees. We will also be able to choose from among various activities, such as doing some more birdwatching or going for a swim in a lagoon. Afterwards, we will go back to the lodge to have lunch and rest.

After having the afternoon free, we will take a boat ride at night to look for the white caiman and black caiman. We will also get a chance to hear nocturnal birds and the diverse sounds emerging from the jungle. We will go back to the lodge to go to bed.

Day 6: Amazon River – Napo River.

We will start the day by watching the sun rise over the Amazon River and then we will sail towards the Napo River. We will get a chance along the way to see diverse bird species, as well as a pink river dolphin if we're lucky. We will reach the Napo River to set up camp and eat lunch. Then, we will have some time to observe the scenery and find out why the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is known as the “jungle of the mirrors.”

Just like on previous days, we will be able to use our time to partake in different activities of our choice, such as hikes, canoe trips, fishing for piranhas, and identifying medicinal plants, just to name a few. After dinner, we will take the boat to go on a nighttime hike to look for insects and animals that come out once the sun goes down. After this, we will go back to camp out on the banks of the Napo River.

Day 8: Río Napo– Yaguas Tribe – Iquitos.

We will eat breakfast early to catch a last glimpse of the jungle surrounding the lodge and spot the animals living there. Then, we will pack up our luggage to begin the return trip back to the city of Iquitos. We will visit the Yaguas tribe along the way, an Amazon people who still preserve their ancient customs, which we will be able to learn about firsthand and also observe their everyday activities. After this, we will continue on our trip until reaching the city of Iquitos, where we will drop you off at your hotel or directly at the airport if you have a flight that same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between the tours to the Peruvian Amazon and the tour to the Pacaya Samiria Reserve?

The tours to the Peruvian Amazon have the Eco Lodge as base of operations, where you will sleep all or most of the nights of the tour. This lodge is located 2 hours from Iquitos, reason why the transportation times are shorter. On the other hand, the tours in the Pacaya Samiria Reserve go deeper into the jungle (which allows you to watch more animals) and you will sleep all or most nights in a tent. Because it is further from Iquitos, the transportation times are longer.

  • Do I need to be vaccinated against yellow fever for the tour?

We recommend having the yellow fever vaccine, although it is not mandatory to enter to Iquitos nor to the jungle.
