Itinerary

Start: day 1 at 7:30 am in downtown Chachapoyas.

End: day 4 at 5:30 pm in downtown Chachapoyas.

Day 1: Pueblo de los Muertos – Sarcophagi of Karajia – Belén Valley (2 and a half hours).

We will pick you up at your hotel to head to Lamud, where our hike will start. First, we will visit the Pueblo de los Muertos (Town of the Dead), where we will see sarcophagi and mausoleums from the Chachapoya culture. When we get back to Lamud, we will eat our box lunch and then continue on with the hike, passing through the villages of Cohechan and Chocta until reaching Cruz Pata. From here, we will visit the Sarcophagi of Karajia. Next, we will take our vehicle to Belén Valley, where we will spend our first night in a traditional cabin.

Day 2: Pirquilla – Congón (6 hours).

After eating breakfast, we will start the day's hike by going up some stairs until reaching the archaeological zone of Pirquilla. This place is part of the Gran Vilaya complex, located in the middle of a cloud forest, where we will be able to see the typical flora and fauna of the place. We will tour some areas of the premises as we receive information from our guide. Afterwards, we will enjoy our box lunch and continue the trek until reaching the Town of Congón, where we will spend the night in a cabin.

Day 3: Lanche – Yumal – Choctamal (8 hours).

We will eat breakfast early in the morning to then start the horseback ride in the forest. We will be able to see the flora and fauna of the low jungle here, and then we will begin a hike to the archaeological center of Lanche. After this visit, we will eat our box lunch and then start another horseback ride up to the Abra Yumal pass. We will take a short break here to take in the view and then continue hiking to Choctamal, where we will spend this last night. There is a shower here with hot water, so we will be able to shower, and then eat dinner and go to bed.

Day 4: Kuelap – Nuevo Tingo – Chachapoyas (2 and a half hours).

We will get up early to eat breakfast at the lodging and then we will take a vehicle to go to the fortress of Kuelap. We will take a cable car to get to the interpretation center, and we will get the first views of the surrounding valleys from up high. We will then make a short visit at the interpretation center before starting the 45-minute trek to the citadel itself. Once there, we will visit the different places that are part of the fortress: living areas, administrative buildings, and the buildings used for religious purposes. After exploring this archaeological site, we will start the trek to the town of Nuevo Tingo, where we will eat lunch and rest a bit. The last thing we will do is visit the archaeological zone of Macro on a hill leading down to the Utcubamba River. Afterwards, we will continue the journey by vehicle until reaching the city of Chachapoyas to end the activity.
