We will gather at our meeting point to head to San Basilio de Palenque, located about 50 kilometers southeast of Cartagena, a town founded in the 17th century by Afro-Colombians who had escaped slavery during the colonial period. Palenque was the first free African town in the Americas, and in 2005 was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO; a place far from the colonies to which African slaves escaped to live in freedom, with autonomy and independence. This township has its own distinctive culture and language, and on this tour you can explore its fascinating history, music, dance and cuisine in a single day. The local guide will take you to the city's cultural center, where you can learn about the history and traditions of the community. You will also have a tour around the emblematic places and historical sites of the town such as Plaza Benkos Biohó. At the end of the tour, you will have a local lunch at a Palenque restaurant and an African drum show (optional).
