What to do in Bogotá, a city embraced by the mountains

Bogotá is one of those cities where, no matter how big it is, you can always feel nature up close. The capital of Colombia is surrounded by mountains and it is the perfect destination to alternate between urban trips and rural excursions.

Let's start with the tourist sites within the city that you can't miss on your trip. First, you have to decide where you're going to look for your accommodation. If you're one of those travelers who likes to have everything at hand, we recommend booking accommodation in the La Candelaria neighborhood, located in the city center. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a quieter and safer area, your best option is Zona Rosa and Chapinero.

To decide what to see in Bogotá, we recommend that on the first day you take a free walking tour where, in addition to history, you will be told about many interesting places. For example, if you like culture, you cannot miss the Gold Museum or the Botero Museum; if you prefer street art, take a graffiti tour; if you want to learn more about the most conflictive periods of the city and the country, choose the War and Peace tour in Colombia and if what you want is to enjoy the local gastronomy, visit the Paloquemao market.

For those days when you want to escape the city and breathe some fresh air, you have one of the most famous tourist spots in Bogotá, the Monserrate Hill. You can choose between two options: go up by cable car or funicular or do it on foot. Keep in mind that if you want to do the walk, you must be in good physical shape, since in addition to having to climb more than 1,000 steps, you will face the difficulty of walking at more than 2,600 meters above sea level in the Colombian capital.

If you have enough days to explore the outskirts of Bogotá, the options are endless. You can choose from exploring an underground salt cathedral, rock climbing in Suesca, visiting the Guatavita Lagoon and seeing the curious Casa Loca, strolling through the colonial town of Villa de Leyva, trekking to the La Chorrera waterfall or visiting a coffee farm.

Get ready, because from the moment you take your shuttle at the Bogotá airport you will not stop having exciting experiences.
